Yeah, it is just that buying blind is, well, blind. And shipping across the ocean aint cheap. I am happy-ish for now with my GPA 604s (measured them last night, finally, -3db @ 30 Hz with my 2A3 amp!), but am on the look out for some reasonably priced 805 or 1005 horns for the "some-day" big-rig. I will have to store them at my bro's if I do find some reasonably priced until I can get over there again and/or find a cheap way to ship them with some other stuff.

well,
i picked up the 2nd speaker today. it's in really nice shape. the owner (Marlon) bought them around the late 70s.(?) at one time he had 3 pairs. he used them for his dj gigs.
anyway,, they have 416 8Cs and 902 8Ts one 416 is going to need reconing. and both boxes will need some tuning up. but over all should be a great sounding pair.

so now with 2 pairs i'm thinking of putting a speaker in all 4 corners of my living room and see if i can convert a lump of coal into a diamond.

Nice! That 416/902 combination is a winning recipe IMHO. Similar configuration to the later Model 19's. If you fine tune those cabs you should get a nice wide bandwidth with those drivers....

offhand does anyone have a ballpark $ estimate on reconing a 416? im wondering if it would be just as cost (and cosmeticaly) effective to just buy a used driver in comperable condition?

I had GPA recone a 416 for me a few years ago for a set of speakers that I've since sold. I remember that it came back sounding phenomenal--as good as new--they really do a great job there. If I remember correctly, it was a little over $100. I'd recone your 416 and make it like new rather than trashing it and buying a used one for (probably) considerably more money.....

$120 + shipping costs.. I also agree that you got a nice combo.. The 902-8T are good but come with loading caps,designated by the T.. If you take them out, change the diaphragm screws (Smaller) and pack the end cap with felt you will then have a pair of 902-8A's... I like those crossovers too ! The N1285's are switchable from 500-800-1200 Hz. With that combo I would run them at 1200 Hz.With 416C's,902-8A's,and the 1285's ? Great Sounding combination !

Edit: Only thing I would be concerned with is I hope he didn't cut the flares for the 18" speaker.. Hopefully it is just the mounting plate that was altered.. If so you should be able to install a new plate and be back in business with that cabinet.

well a little change here,
i pulled the back off of speaker two and it has a 515 8g. and a closer look at the hf shows it to be a 902 8 >B<. i do have a pair of 8As anyway.
guess i really wasn't looking all that close when i brought these home. but then i brought one home one day and the last, another.

so now the questian, do i go with 515s or 416s. if i go with the 416s i would need a pair. with the 515s i can get one for a little over 240$
